Is to me a step in the right direction.  Sony actually supporting homebrew apps on their next gen linux based console, is nothing short of a revolutionary leap forward in console design.  Whether they deliver on this has yet to be seen, but from a competitive standpoint, they have to adopt linux in a hard way, and make their ps3 interoperable with other linux computers, and as robust as modded xbox’s.  There’s a decent discusison of this over at joystiq, check it out
