X06…or “Why You Bought a 360″

While no one can claim to handle this kind of thing perfectly, I get a warm gushy feeling (a G-RATED one, Beavis) about all the hullabaloo that gaming receives in this day and age.

Speaking of gargantuan press events for gaming alone, we’ve got:

CES
E3 (now in bite-sized variety!)
TGS
"X0#" Events

…and these are just the big ones!  Indeed exciting times to be a gamer.

As an aside, I applaud Microsoft’s aggressive push to substantiate the Xbox Live Marketplace with oodles of content direct from the show.  I still am giddy with glee over the demos and trailers that we get fed in near real-time that coincide with the events under discussion.  But enough of the intro, already…

While there is certainly a multi-front assault on the gaming world establishing Microsoft’s solid position in the gaming market, I am most interested in the announcements regarding the new and existing IPs that are being brought to the 360.  These include, but are not limited to:

Crossfire
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Assassin’s Creed (in-game footage FTW, ladies and germs!)
Bioshock (this needs to come out already)
Banjo & Kazooie (um…nah)
Mass Effect (I might never see my roommate again)
Gears of War (He probably won’t see me again)
Kane & Lynch

…and so on.

And the much discussed HD-DVD drive, with full 1080p support (thanks to the autumn dashboard update), at $200?  Sounds pretty reasonable if it becomes the media of choice…

I think, beyond all the announcements, what interested me most was the sheer production values of the whole thing.  I was not able to attend (only in spirit, thanks to Joystiq’s blow-by-blow), but the Peter Jackson visit is simply audacious!  I love the man’s work, but it really just shows that a little money doesn’t go as far as a whole bunch…

Oh yeah, and let’s not forget this year’s most awesome transition:

HD-DVD pricing and release date
HD-DVD drive will include King-Kong HD-DVD
Peter Jackson walks out
Peter Jackson starts talking about Halo Franchise and future plans
(Best…segue…ever)

I guess my thesis statement on this rather meandering post is simply that there is a fervent backing (no doubt financially inspired…) in interactive entertainment, and it’s great to see the mediums finally converging in a much more direct way.  I think I will uncontrollably vomit if I see one more "3rd Person Action" title based on a movie.  It’s time that gaming as an art form is treated as such.  After all, games like Half-Life 2 and Okami (which is garnering RAVE reviews all over the ‘Net) don’t need to be the only successful gaming entries, do they?  Not to say every movie-based game (or extention of said IP) needs to be of that calibur…it just needs to reach a little more for the stars than say…I dunno..X-Men 3: The Last Stand…

What movie IP would you like to see translated?  To what type of gaming genre?  And what development house?
