An admitted Xbox 360 Fanboy, I’m still amazed at how much ammunition I can find after a cursory inspection of the web. GamesIndustry.biz has a great interview posted from Jamie McDonald (SCE VP of Europe) containing several rather absurd responses to some non-too-softball questions. It’s a very funny read.
The real question, though, is, "Are they fo’ real?" I honestly can’t imagine such successful business people in the corporate world continually spewing such ridiculousness. (Such absurdity has provided a large percentage of recent fuel for the truly hilariously-titled "CE-Oh no he didn’t!" series of articles over at Engadget) I’ve been in the corporate world for 7 years of my adult life (in varying forms and levels), and people who say this crap generally don’t exist. Much less head an entire division? It just reeks of fake to me now and again.
If this is to be believed, probably the most interesting quote (other than the "Urination on Europe" comments) is this:
What about the UMD movie format? Has that turned out as well as you’d hoped?
At PlayStation, we always want to create open formats, and we were happy to offer the UMD as an alternative format for the PSP. It’s not our core expertise, but there you go. To be honest I don’t know the numbers in terms of films, but I think you’ll find in general the market for movies on discs of any type is not particularly great at the moment.
Doesn’t this very comment fly in the face of force-feeding your gaming audience a new disc format? Why would you put all of your eggs in a basket when "the market for movies on discs of any type is not particularly great at the moment"? I think there would be lots more eager customers (and less of a European shortage, guys…) if you just swapped it out with a fast DVD drive and be done with it. The one positive piece of press I keep hearing from Sony is that they have a strong belief in the future of digital distribution…can we just skip this "advance" altogether?
What do you, the consumers, think?
