New DLC coming to Vegas

Recently I’ve been a Rainbow Six Vegas fanatic.  Interventions have been suggested, my roommate and co-editor has tried reasoning with me, bribing me, and even pulling the plug on the 360, only to find it terrifyingly still supporting my habit through the sheer electrical energy created by my lust for this game.

Which brings us to the subject of Ubisoft’s announcement of 5 new maps, and two new game modes, as downloadable content on the xbox 360.  Actually, it’s only three new maps (which all look interesting) with Bordertown and Kill House, being “Re-lit.”  Hopefully that means true nighttime combat, which would offer a truly unique experience, although I’d like to see the ability to customize your clothing in the equipment settings within a match lobby (currently you can only customize your camo prior to going online looking for games, and have to leave the match to change it).  That said, the two new game modes, are a “protect the VIP” mode, which sets one of your team up as an unarmored unarmed bullet bag that you’ve got to get from point “A” to “B” while a wrathful assault team singularly tries to take him out.  That should be fun.

The second mode, Total Conquest, is basically the only mode available in Battlefield.  You have three points on the map which you need to secure and hold in order to move your points up; first team to get their points to the top wins.  While the fact that this was the only game mode in BF, I’m actually excited about it here.

It sounds like a truly challenging game play mode for team players in terms of 1) strategizing which control points on which maps are the easiest to hold, how to set up your defense/offense, and how to get yourself in to take over a control point, and then keep it while taking casualties.  In practice, it’s a lot like the emergent game play in attack and defend in calypso casino.  There, most people are setting the maps at 20 minutes, which makes it a foregone conclusion that any halfway decent assault team will eventually get the package back to the heli-pad and their spawn.  From there, it’s an unwritten rule that the assault team holds the package there, not scoring until the last seconds of the game, while the Defenders assault the helipad, sometimes capturing and holding it, etc…  This new mode, kind of legitimizes that, and makes it more interesting as there will be three points to potentially attack and defend, and absolutely no cheap way out with an early score.   That alone might be worth five bucks.  The VIP mode is pretty neat too, in that it forces people to think like a team, and coordinate strategies.  But there are still way too many people playing this game who don’t like to use their mics, which devastates the point of this game.

Anyhow, those are my thoughts.  Hopefully this will cost 400 MSPS, but my guess is they’ll make it 800, and I’ll whine about it, as I pony up.
