God of War 2 is "teh r0x0rs". Plain and simple. Write it down.
Being the whore for production values that I typically am known to be, I’m always a sucker for a game that goes to great lengths to infuse "love" into the art form of video gaming. God of War 2 is one such title.
I’ll preface my awe and amazement by saying I’ve only had the opportunity to experience the first two levels. The intro "sequence" of GoW2 is stunning by any measure, "next-gen" or not. The battle with the Colossus is chockful of the now ubiquitous "water-cooler moments", whether it be ripping off a giant hand or ripping through it’s marble-y cheek with those oh-so-tasty Athena blades. The cinematics are well-paced and expertly executed (wait until you see Gaea…she’s the most perfectly rendered character I’ve seen in some time, EXACTLY what I expected but never visualized). In fact, the sweeping production permeates every facet of the game: the great bone-rattling audio, the confident camera system (which, admittedly, is a pretty necessary piece of the puzzle for a game that takes away your camera control…), the visceral attack/combo system. All 10′s.
I find it particularly amazing that I experienced more types of gameplay in two levels of GoW2 than in other full games I’ve played. And they are ALL deftly handled and delivered to you. I repeatedly welled up with joy at DLB’s House ‘O Sony with all of the wondrous proceedings. I highly recommend everyone who has the ability to dust off your PS2, plug her in, and rent (or buy) a copy of GoW2*. It is absolutely worth your time in the intro alone.
* – As a side note, I certainly don’t think that, at $40 or so, that GoW2 isn’t a great value (I’ve purchased $60 that delivered a sliver of the entertainment), it’s more the lack of multiplayer modes, which are the true measure (in my book) of longevity in any game. Phenomenal game, by any perspective!
