So, a couple of months ago, dragonwyntir and myself parted ways as roommates to jump headlong into the world of grownup-dom. As part of the divvying up of our “marital” property from our happy home, dragonwyntir took with him one, slightly used xbox 360, leaving me almost entirely gameless in my living room (except of course the sweaty katamari marathons).
But, this Saturday I am happy to report I bit the bullet, and brought home a shiny new xbox 360.
Since dragonwyntir also took with him his 51” HDTV, I’ve been left to fend for myself with my ntsc only sony Trinitron. It’s been an interesting adjustment playing hd games on an sdtv, but I’ve made a couple of tweaks that have made it an easy adjustment.
The biggest thing I’ve noticed is that 360 games are designed with widescreen in mind. High Def aside, there is definitely a design concept that favors 16:9. As such, the most helpful thing I’ve done has been set my 360 for widescreen, and set my sony to 16:9 enhanced mode. Everything is letterboxed, but everything also looks a lot crisper and plays like it should. In fact, rainbow six, didn’t even give me an option for 4:3. Gears did, but it sucked. The over the shoulder view was designed to give you a widescreen view, and playing it in 4:3 simply meant I got walloped. A lot.
Anyhow, this is really just a note to say, I’m back in the game. HDTV next to come.
