So, I figured I would spin some Frontlines last night since I have to give it back in a couple of days…and my preliminary thoughts are…
Very nice.
I completely agree with Rich that these guys didn’t phone it in. It definitely doesn’t have the shiny-ness of a Gears or a Bioshock, but very competently told, and the missions have been pretty fun so far. I like how open the boards feel, and the story is not as terrible as I thought it might be.
My ONLY knock so far is the AI of my squad. It is distractingly bad. Like, comically bad. I decided to go a bit rogue and run around completing some of the objectives just to see if I broke something. Apparently what I broke was the sanity of my team. I came back after knocking out all three objectives, and my team was locked and loaded in a military humvee. They were stuck on another “good guy vehicle” that had blown up (by their hands, I believe), unloading limitless rounds into the flaming husk of this thing. Now, perhaps they were doing this because they were bored (I did leave them in the dust), but there were two “bad guy vehicles” in plain sight (one only a few yards away) firing at me as I arrived! My team continued to ensure the death of the now-completely-decimated truck as I dispatched both of the attackers. I left the team there, and never heard from them again until the end-of-level cutscene.
Outside of that, I’m enjoying the single player.
