I’m not sure how to process this, except to be in complete denial until we get an official announcement. And then I shall commence weeping.
Next Generation has an interview with Marc Whitten about some of the oh-so-wonderful milestones Xbox Live has hit, and an interesting plan Microsoft will be implementing to delist poor performing titles on XBLA (not a terrible idea, IMHO). But it was this gem that actually stopped my heart for a second:
Last year Xbox 360 owners got a spring dashboard update in early May. It’s now late May and you still haven’t announced anything regarding this year’s update. Should 360 owners be holding their breaths for it?We have taken a different approach this spring and spent a lot of our time and resources of building the proper infrastructure and scale for the service not just today but also into the future. So while most users will not notice any significant changes to the dashboard this spring, I can tell you that the team will be releasing a new digital rights management (DRM) tool next month that will allow you to better consolidate your licenses for downloaded content to a single Xbox and allow you the freedom to be able to play your content both online and offline.
I am absolutely at a loss for words. I want my Spring Dashboard update (need I remind my favorite console manufacturer that their competition releases several updates a year at minimum?).
UPDATE: Looks like this is so. I am too angry to post nice things right now. And for the record, releasing a patch to an overbearing DRM system that comes into play because of an unacceptable hardware failure rate is not a “feature”, and shouldn’t be positioned as such.
