From 6 to 40?!

chefhat40

Just a quick tidbit for you NXE-loving guys and gals out there.  In my eternal thirst to find out more technical information about the NXE, I stumbled across a piece of info you might be interested in.  This comes from one of the “Voices” Xbox.com pages:

“Speaking of downloads, the Active Downloads queue has been expanded from six entries to a whopping 40, making it much easier to fill your hard drive with lots of great stuff.”

Most of the article rehashes the normally touted features, but I thought y’all … Continue Reading

NXE: What I’m not crazy about…

crazy

By now most of you have switched to the NXE, messing around with Avatars, trying out the Netflix integration, and partied yourselves to death with the Xbox Live Party feature.  As per my previous post, I’ve been messing with the various features of the NXE, and I’ve compiled a few items that I’d love to see fixed in the next release:

The NXE is upon us!

jimi-hendrix

Howdy all!  It’s been a pretty crazy couple of weeks here in Austin, and while I’ve been personally trying to keep up with the NXE news, I haven’t had a moment to share any of my admittedly meager findings with you.

I did have the opportunity to get into the NXE preview program (fourth and final wave, but early is still early, right?), and I’ve been noodling with it for the past couple of days.  Instead of insulting your web browsing skills by rehashing the completely overstated (but still impressive) features of the NXE, I’m going to point you guys here (Joystiq is still one of the best in the biz) for the requisite list of info.

Instead, I thought it might be a refreshing change of pace to talk about the smaller touches that were folded in during the complete software reinvention of the Xbox 360.

Here there be demos…

trybeforeyoubuy

Over the past several days, there has been an avalanche of fairly high-profile demos on Xbox Live.  The DLB10000 and I have discussed this at length: demos and firmware updates are two of the most wonderful things about this generation of consoles.  With the holiday season fast approaching, I am glad some companies are taking time to demonstrate their wares to the masses before we all go broke trying to purchase games for our friends and loved ones…and maybe one or two for ourselves.

I had an opportunity to download four demos and take them for a spin: Mirror’s Edge, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Naruto: The Broken Bond, and Banjo & Kazooie: Nuts ‘n Bolts (that’s an obscene amount of colons…)

Intrepid Ibex – Linux for the rest of us.

ibexnationalparkAfter installing Ubuntu 8.10 on a whim and based on my love for fearless goats, I wrote up some of my initial impressions to sound off with Dragonwyntir.  Among the things I liked a lot, the networking has been improved, the install is pain free, driver management (at least on my m1330 laptop) was smooth and automatic, and the hot-swappable user accounts made diving into “root” a lot easier.

I have no clue who she is…

worker_l

…but admit it: you’re glad I put her up here.  :)

Even though yours truly bleeds Xbox green, I felt like the old site needed some home improvement (and you thought her inclusion was completely random).  I’ve added some fancy new Gamercards, a spiffy polling system (yes, you should vote, on November 4th and every time I have some inane question), and a slightly more platform-neutral color scheme.  Please drop your thoughts in the comments and let me know if you like the new aesthetic.
